Adjusting Bilstein Performance Shocks

On Slingshot models that are equipped with Bilstein Performance Shocks, the spring preload and suspension camping can be adjusted. Bilstein Performance Shocks came factory installed on model year 2018 Slingshot SLR LE models.

An uneven adjustment of performance shocks may cause poor vehicle handling, which could result in a loss of vehicle control. Always ensure the vehicle height and damping adjustments are equal on all three wheels.

Always perform shock spring preload adjustments with the weight of the vehicle removed from the shock and with the shock at full extension.

Clicker Settings
Vehicles equipped with performance shocks have damping adjustment on all three shock absorbers.

To adjust the compression damping, rotate the clicker wheel (1) located on each shock to the desired position. For a softer feel, rotate the clicker wheel toward setting 1. For a firmer feel, rotate the adjuster toward setting 10. Always ensure equal setting on all three shock absorbers.

Spring Preload Adjustment

Spring preload

To adjust the spring preload (2), do the following:

  • Elevate the vehicle to allow the suspension to fully extend.
  • The upper spanner nut on the shock is the lock nut (3). The lower spanner nut is the adjuster nut (4). Loosen the lock nut by turning it counter-clockwise (as viewed from the top of the shock) with the spanner wrench found in the glove box of the vehicle.
  • Adjust shock preload by rotating the adjuster clockwise (as viewed from the top of the shock) to INCREASE preload (firm) and raise the vehicle. Rotate counter-clockwise to DECREASE preload (softer) and lower the vehicle.
  • Lock the adjustment ring by rotating the lock nut clockwise until tight.

Factory settings

Never adjust the spring preload to an installed length shorter than the factory length or longer than the maximum length as shown in the above chart. Damage to the suspension could result. When decreasing preload, ensure at least one turn to preload is holding the retainer against the spring.
